          During 15-21 January 2020, Ms.Lada Phumas, Director of the Devawongse Varopakarn Institute of Foreign Affairs led a group of 19 participants under the Pre-Retirement Training Programme for 2020 to visit Thailand’s northern provinces, namely, Nan, Phrae and Chiang Rai.  The purpose of the visit is to learn more about the latest development in the region through the so called “action learning method”.  It is through this method that the participants learnt more about local culture, history, knowledge and different genres of local artistic traditions.  They had an opportunity to exchange views and experience with local leaders and gurus at each cultural site.  At some sites, they were allowed to join the local community services.  They were encouraged to explore new hobbies and work as alternative ways of living after their retirement.


In Nan Province, the group of participants was given an opportunity to learn more about local history and culture with local gurus.  The group paid visits to various sites such as Pew Pa Fai, Keleb Jordan coffee house, Manipruk Village and Baan Nam Pak.  At Pew Pa Fai, the group learnt a weaving teachnique used by Thai Lue, an ethnic group living in northern Thailand.  It is at Mr.Keleb Jordan’s coffee house where Mr.Keleb shared with the group his insight into his coffee production.  At Manipruk Village, the group had an opportunity to explore cultural diversity in ethnic communities.  It was at Baan Nam Pak in Tha Wang Pha where the group was provided a briefing by representatives from the Royal Project Pid Thong Lang Phra District and the Mae Fah Luang Foundation on forest preservation and poverty eradication.

     
 

In Phrae, the group of the participants paid a visit to Kham Mae Studio where the group discussed with young artists who form the network of those people who just returned from working in cities to buid their community clay pottery industry.  The group was provided an opportunity to join the clay pottery workshop.  Later, the participants exchanged views with Mr.Wuttikrai Phathong, a community leader and the founder of Kaew Wanna, a local brand of traditional textile.  Besides, the participants were briefed on local culture and history at Ban Pin community where a traditional textile museum run by Mr.Komol Phanitphan is located.  Later, they paid homage to Wat Phrathat Chohae, a famous Buddhist temple with a pagoda enshrining relics of the Buddha.
 
     
 

In Phayao Province, the group paid a visit to Wat Si Khom Kham, a Buddhist temple where participants worshiped Phrachow Tonluang, a famous centuries-old Buddha statue.  At Baan Din Kam Pu Ju learning community, the group exchanged views and experience with local gurus on the concept of self reliance in line with the philosophical principles of sufficiency economy through the so called action learning.
 
     
 

In Chiangrai Province, the group had an opportunity to visit the Thai Tai Co Agriculture Co. Ltd., a certified factory that exports ginger products.  This factory is well known for its efforts made in striking a balance between community, indutory and environment.  Later, at Heaven on Earth farm and homestay, the group was provided with information on tea product development, as well as on how a cooperation was formed between local community and entrepreneurs who are commited to adding value to their tea products, allowing their local products to reach wider world markets.
 
     
 

Throughout the one-week trip, all the participants were well received.  Knowledge was gained through various activities, especially their extensive exchange of views and perspectives with local gurus.  This would help contribute to the development of local communities in various dimensions.  And, its success stories could be learned and shared abroad as well.
