On 7 November 2025, the Devawongse Varopakarn Institute of Foreign Affairs (DVIFA), in collaboration with the Department of Amercian and South Pacific Affairs (ASPA), organized a Special Talk on the Occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and Mexico on “Mexico’s Vision towards the Asia-Pacific Region.” The event aimed to open up opportunities for civil servants at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to listen to Mexico’s views towards the Asia-Pacific region from H.E. Mr. Fernando González Saiffe, Director-General for Asia-Pacific, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States, during his visit to Thailand for the 6th Political Consultations between Thailand and Mexico.

               On this occasion, Mr. Chuchart Jirojkul, Minister Counsellor and Acting Director of DVIFA, delivered the opening remarks. He spoke of Thailand and Mexico’s cooperation in international fora, such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and touched upon Thailand and Mexico’s bilateral cooperation. He then invited DVIFA and ASPA’s special guest, Director-General Saiffe, who has wide-ranging experience in both multilateral and bilateral diplomacy, to deliver his Special Talk.

               Director-General Saiffe introduced Mexico as an important global actor with wide-ranging economic cooperation. He also presented Mexico as a Pacific nation, which has the Asia-Pacific region as its second largest trading partner. Mexico sees potential in the Asia-Pacific region, which is expected to represent more than half of the world economy by 2040, and has identified opportunities for collaboration in numerous sectors. This includes cooperation in agriculture, natural resources, and energy. During the Q&A session after the Special Talk, Director-General Saiffe exchanged views with participants on Mexico’s trade policy, Mexico’s views towards economic cooperation with the Indo-Pacific region and efforts to elevate relations with ASEAN to new heights. Such exchanges serve to enhance our understanding of Mexico’s views towards the Asia-Pacific region and to ensure that our understanding of Mexico is more comprehensive.
